At the April monthly meeting of the Cascades Amateur Radio Society, a presentation was given by one of our members, Dave Foster (W3IGT), who is a retired geologist. Dave has been in the salt mines underneath Detroit! The title of the presentation was “Radio Rocks.”
Sadly, Dave did not wear his Elvis impersonation suit for the presentation but the information he gave was very well organized and easy for the non-technical person to follow. He also included in the presentation information more tuned to the technically astute such as the nature of a given molecular structure. As a result, the presentation was very interesting for both the layman and scientist.
In this presentation, Dave explained the historical development of crystals with respect to electromagnetic generation. This might otherwise be called…radios.
Of particular interest is the vital role quartz crystals played in World War II. The War Department wisely decided in 1941 to make crystal technology development a priority. As a result, the outcome of Hitler’s Battle of the Bulge was turned back where it otherwise may not have been.
Viewing time is 52 minutes of captivating information.
